When it comes to content creation, knowing WHAT to say is just one aspect.
There’s a second, equally important factor that’s often overlooked – and that’s HOW you say what you want to say.
Call it tone of voice, brand style, or simply personality, the way you convey your message WILL (and does) influence who tunes in and who turns off.
That’s because your content’s personality will evoke an emotional reaction.
It will inspire certain people to become fans – and cause others to disappear into the hills, never to be seen again!
That’s because your content’s tone sends out signals.
It provides clues as to what you’ll be like to work with. Do you come across as fun, serious, crazy, professional, interesting, boring, straight talking, or deep thinking (for example)? It’s true! These aspects can be conveyed through your choice of words. And even if you’re audience aren’t consciously aware of how they react, certain tones will appeal to them more than others.
And that’s why the way you share is as important as what you share.
Remember that all-important phrase… WHO YOU ARE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN WHAT YOU KNOW 🙂
Let’s explore FOUR WAYS to use your personality to make more impact, boost your profile, and attract the people who you can best serve.
1. Just be yourself
OK, so this probably sounds a tad cheesy and a little throwaway!
But don’t dismiss it. I promise this is amongst the best suggestion you’ll ever receive when it comes to building your business – especially if you’re using content to entice people to work with YOU.
Let me ask you a question…
WHO DO YOU WANT TO WORK WITH?
- People you like (and who like you)
- Just anybody – including people who don’t value or appreciate who you are and what you do
So I’m guessing you chose the first one. We’ve all been there, right! We’ve all had clients that in hindsight weren’t a good fit for us. And not only weren’t they a good fit, but they didn’t make us feel good either. As a result, work became more than a chore than a joy – and it probably knocked your confidence too.
In comparison, we’ve all worked with people where you just gel perfectly. They bring out the best in you. You’re excited to dive into their projects and you end each day feeling that you did a great job.
For sure, the quality of work you deliver is critical, but don’t underestimate the importance of your personality in the relationship.
Fact is, when you decide to be yourself in your content, you attract people who like you! It makes life so much easier! After all, it’s pretty hard to keep being someone you’re not!
Worst of all, it’s soul-destroying trying to fit yourself into a box that simply doesn’t suit you.
Now I get you want to come across as professional. I want to as well! We all want to convey that we’re good at what we do and that clients can trust us to do a great job.
But professional doesn’t mean you have to adopt corporate speak. You don’t have to put on some posh voice in your content that you’d never use face-to-face.
Instead, write as you would when speaking with a friend. This will ensure your content makes you personable and approachable. It feels a lot more natural too! Then the shackles can come off. Give yourself permission to let your voice free and you’ll stop hemming yourself in.
speak your truth.
So go for it 🙂
We’re in the age of social brands now. Your audience doesn’t want to interact with a faceless entity. They want to strike up conversations with YOU.
So just be yourself, express your personality in your content, and let the doors to new opportunities fling wide open.
2. Decide to let people into your world
It’s true; your content should be about your target audience and not about you.
When the right people read your content, you want it to spark an emotional reaction. You want them to feel inspired, motivated, and excited about the possibility of working with you.
But that doesn’t mean your stories shouldn’t be told – quite the opposite in fact.
Tell your stories and you’ll shift the relationship you have with your audience. That’s because you reveal your depths, show your vulnerabilities, and build trust that you understand your audience AND you can help them get a result.
As an introvert, dropping my guard was seriously hard. I’m a private person. I hold things very close to my chest. But I knew that ‘secrecy’ was holding me back.
If you don’t speak up, people can’t see your depths. They can’t really know you. They’ll find it harder to relate to you.
It’s why I started to share more.
Remember, people like people who are like themselves. Through the power of stories, you can build connections, strike up conversations, and nurture your know, like, trust factor – without it feeling forced or contrived.
3. Be different without trying to be different
How will your audience know to pick you over someone else? Highlighting differences and unique aspects of the work you do is one important way.
But you don’t have to make it more complicated than it really is.
Remember, YOU are a key factor that makes your business different.
You may offer a similar service to a competitor, BUT because you are not your competitor, your service delivery will be entirely different.
Your personality traits, your stories, your life lessons, your values, your beliefs, and your WHY influence the way you do business. All these factors mix together to create something unique that just can’t be replicated by anyone else.
To put it another way… your will make your clients feel entirely different than a competitor will – simply because you are you and they are them!
That’s why knowing WHO YOU ARE is so critical when it comes to creating your content and your messaging. In fact, it matters a whole lot more than you probably think.
4. Harnessing your passion
I remember the first time I decided to reveal more me in my content.
I had to take a huge bravery pill! It felt like such a massive step. Instead of hiding behind clients, I was coming out from the shadows and taking a stand for what I believed and what I had to say.
I wrote a post to share a revealing story on Facebook.
And I felt sick! My heart raced, my palms sweated, my stomach felt nauseous, and I was overwhelmed with a rush of fear-driven thought!
When I got to the core I could see I feared judgement. What would people think of my stories? What would people think about the real me? What if I got rejected?
I was TERRIFIED of rearing off the mask. Suddenly there was zero place to hide.
But when I pressed ‘PUBLISH’ I felt liberated – because I understood the alternative and I no longer wanted that.
- Shrinking into the shadows
- Playing smaller than you have the potential to be
- Reigning yourself in because you’re not sure if you’ll stand out too much
- Denying the message you feel you were born to share…
We can make far more impact when we speak our truth.
Because our truth harnesses our passion – and as you know, passion is an infectious energy that inspires other so listen to what you have to say. But not only that… Passion lights a fire that makes you relentless and inspires you to be unstoppable in your mission.
Passion invigorates your message and your content. It unleashes thoughts and ideas that can take your message to new heights. It elevates your voice to a new level and helps you stand out and be heard.
And the best way to harness passion is to find your you and share that with the world.
Discover the message you were born to share and talk about that. Why? Because it’s the thing that can be best told by YOU. It’s the message that needs to be infused with your personality. It’s the thing that will draw the right people into your world and it’s the nuance that allows you to be ‘different’ without even trying.
And when you unlock it… well, EVERYTHING changes 🙂
